Stretching across the vast, golden plains of the South Island’s interior, Mackenzie Country is a land of epic skies, turquoise lakes, and rugged mountain backdrops. Named after the legendary sheep rustler James Mackenzie, this high-country region feels like a world apart, where the air is crisp and the silence is broken only by the wind and the cry of a kea. It’s a place that demands you stop, breathe, and soak in landscapes that have inspired poets and filmmakers alike.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Give yourself at least 2–3 days to properly absorb Mackenzie Country. Most travellers base themselves in Lake Tekapo or Twizel and spend one day exploring the lakes and Mount John, another day heading into Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park for a hike, and a third for stargazing or scenic flights. If you’re short on time, a whirlwind day trip from Christchurch is possible (3 hours each way), but you’ll only scratch the surface.
