Twizel is a small, modern town in the Mackenzie Basin, purpose-built in the 1960s for hydroelectric development. Today it's the perfect base for exploring the turquoise lakes, towering mountains, and dark-sky reserves of the Aoraki Mackenzie region. With a relaxed, outdoorsy vibe and a surprising food scene, Twizel offers easy access to some of New Zealand's most dramatic landscapes without the crowds of nearby tourist hubs.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1–2 nights in Twizel. With one full day you can explore Lake Pukaki, do a short walk in Mount Cook National Park, and enjoy a salmon lunch. Add a second day for stargazing, a longer hike, or a trip to Lake Ohau. Twizel also works well as a stopover between Christchurch and Queenstown, breaking a 5–6 hour drive into two days.
