Wanaka is the sort of place where you arrive for a weekend and stay for a week. Cradled by the Southern Alps and lapped by the turquoise waters of Lake Wanaka, this lakeside town offers a more laid-back alternative to its glitzy neighbour Queenstown. The air smells of pine and fresh snowmelt, and the main street hums with a creative, outdoorsy energy. Whether you're chasing epic hikes, boutique wineries, or simply a coffee with a view of the Remarkables, Wanaka delivers with understated charm.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Two to three days is the sweet spot for Wanaka. Use your first day to tackle the big hike (Roys Peak or Rob Roy), the second for lake activities and Puzzling World, and the third to explore the wineries or take a scenic flight over the glaciers. If you're a skier or snowboarder, add a day for Cardrona or Treble Cone in winter. Wanaka is compact enough that you can do a lot without a car, but a vehicle gives you flexibility to reach trailheads and nearby lakes.
