Wanaka is the sort of place where you arrive for a weekend and stay for a week. Cradled by the Southern Alps and lapped by the turquoise waters of Lake Wanaka, this lakeside town offers a more laid-back alternative to its glitzy neighbour Queenstown. The air smells of pine and fresh snowmelt, and the main street hums with a creative, outdoorsy energy. Whether you're chasing epic hikes, boutique wineries, or simply a coffee with a view of the Remarkables, Wanaka delivers with understated charm.
Highlights & What to See
- Roys Peak Track – A punishing but iconic climb rewarded with one of New Zealand's most photographed views: the lake, the town, and a perfect triangle of water. Start early to beat the crowds and the heat.
- That Wanaka Tree – The lonely willow in the lake is a social-media star, but seeing it in the quiet dawn light (or with a dusting of snow) is genuinely magical. No filter needed.
- Puzzling World – Equal parts fun and bizarre: a maze of mirrors, illusion rooms, and a giant outdoor labyrinth that will disorient even the best navigator. Great for families or a rainy-day diversion.
- Lake Wanaka & Lake Hāwea – Swim, kayak, or simply stroll the lakefront. The two lakes are connected by a scenic drive; Lake Hāwea is quieter, with a wilder, more rugged edge.
- Mount Aspiring National Park – A UNESCO World Heritage site on Wanaka's doorstep. The Rob Roy Glacier Track is a must-do: a relatively short walk to a thundering waterfall and hanging glacier.
- Wanaka Lavender Farm – A fragrant stop just out of town, with lavender fields, farm animals, and homemade lavender ice cream. Peak bloom is December to February.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days is the sweet spot for Wanaka. Use your first day to tackle the big hike (Roys Peak or Rob Roy), the second for lake activities and Puzzling World, and the third to explore the wineries or take a scenic flight over the glaciers. If you're a skier or snowboarder, add a day for Cardrona or Treble Cone in winter. Wanaka is compact enough that you can do a lot without a car, but a vehicle gives you flexibility to reach trailheads and nearby lakes.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Queenstown – Just an hour's drive over the Crown Range, Queenstown is Wanaka's adrenaline-fuelled cousin. Combine the two for a trip that balances thrills and chill.
- Cardrona – A historic gold-mining settlement turned ski resort. In summer, visit the Cardrona Hotel for a pint, and in winter, hit the slopes.
- Glenorchy – A stunning lakeside village at the head of Lake Wakatipu, known as the gateway to Paradise (and a filming location for Lord of the Rings). About 90 minutes from Wanaka via Queenstown.
- Haast Pass & the West Coast – Drive the spectacular Haast Pass highway to reach the wild West Coast. The road passes waterfalls, blue pools, and the Gates of Haast bridge – a classic New Zealand road trip.
