New Zealand's West Coast is a raw, untamed stretch of wilderness where the Tasman Sea crashes against ancient rainforests and glaciers carve their way down from the Southern Alps. This is the country at its most dramatic: think misty gorges, pancake-shaped rock formations, and rivers the colour of glacial flour. The Coast Road (State Highway 6) is one of the world's great drives, linking tiny towns that feel a world away from the rest of the country. Here, you'll find gold-rush history, jade (pounamu) workshops, and some of the most accessible glaciers on the planet.
Highlights & What to See
- Franz Josef Glacier & Fox Glacier – Two of the world's most accessible glaciers, where you can hike up to the terminal face or take a heli-hike onto the ice. The walk to the Franz Josef glacier viewpoint is short and rewarding; for a more immersive experience, book a guided ice trek.
- Punakaiki Pancake Rocks – Limestone formations that look like stacks of pancakes, with blowholes that erupt at high tide. The short loop walk is a must-do, especially in stormy weather when the sea is at its most dramatic.
- Hokitika – A quirky coastal town famous for its wild beach, driftwood sculptures, and greenstone (pounamu) galleries. Don't miss the Hokitika Gorge, with its impossibly turquoise water.
- West Coast Wilderness Trail – A cycle trail that winds through rainforest, past lakes and historic gold-mining sites, suitable for all fitness levels.
- Whataroa White Heron Sanctuary – The only nesting site of the kotuku (white heron) in New Zealand, accessible by guided boat tour.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers spend 3–5 days driving the West Coast from north to south (or vice versa). This allows time for glacier walks, a stop at Punakaiki, and a wander through Hokitika. If you're short on time, focus on the glaciers and Pancake Rocks as a two-day detour from the Nelson or Wanaka regions. For hikers and nature lovers, a week gives you the chance to explore the Heaphy Track or other Great Walks in Kahurangi National Park.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Nelson Tasman – The sunny gateway to Abel Tasman National Park and golden-sand beaches, a perfect contrast to the wild West Coast.
- Wanaka – A lakeside town with world-class hiking (Roys Peak) and skiing, easily reached via the Haast Pass.
- Queenstown – New Zealand's adventure capital, a 4–5 hour drive from Franz Josef via the Haast Pass.
- Arthur's Pass National Park – A dramatic mountain pass with short walks and alpine views, linking the West Coast to Canterbury.
