New Zealand's West Coast is a raw, untamed stretch of wilderness where the Tasman Sea crashes against ancient rainforests and glaciers carve their way down from the Southern Alps. This is the country at its most dramatic: think misty gorges, pancake-shaped rock formations, and rivers the colour of glacial flour. The Coast Road (State Highway 6) is one of the world's great drives, linking tiny towns that feel a world away from the rest of the country. Here, you'll find gold-rush history, jade (pounamu) workshops, and some of the most accessible glaciers on the planet.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most travellers spend 3–5 days driving the West Coast from north to south (or vice versa). This allows time for glacier walks, a stop at Punakaiki, and a wander through Hokitika. If you're short on time, focus on the glaciers and Pancake Rocks as a two-day detour from the Nelson or Wanaka regions. For hikers and nature lovers, a week gives you the chance to explore the Heaphy Track or other Great Walks in Kahurangi National Park.
