Whataroa is a tiny, tranquil settlement on the West Coast's wild glacial plain, best known as the gateway to the Ōkārito Lagoon and the only mainland breeding colony of the kotuku (white heron). This is off-the-beaten-path New Zealand at its most serene, where misty mornings, bird calls, and the distant roar of the Tasman Sea set the pace.
Highlights & What to See
- White Heron Sanctuary Tours – The sole reason most visitors stop: a guided boat trip up the Ōkārito River to view the kotuku breeding colony (seasonal, Sept–Jan). It's a magical, intimate wildlife encounter.
- Ōkārito Lagoon – A vast, unspoiled coastal lagoon perfect for kayaking, birdwatching, or simply soaking up the solitude. The Ōkārito Walkway offers easy lakeside strolls.
- Whataroa River – Jet-boat tours and salmon fishing are popular here; the river is also a scenic spot for a picnic.
- West Coast Wildlife Centre – A small but informative stop in town, with kiwi and tuatara exhibits.
Suggested Time to Spend
Whataroa itself is a quick stop – half a day is enough for the white heron tour and a wander around the lagoon. Most travellers use it as a lunch break or overnight pause between Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers, or as a base for a day of kayaking on Ōkārito Lagoon.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Franz Josef Glacier – 25 minutes north, with glacier walks, heli-hikes, and hot pools.
- Fox Glacier – 30 minutes south, equally dramatic and less crowded.
- Punakaiki – 1.5 hours north, famous for the Pancake Rocks and blowholes.
- Hokitika – 1 hour north, a charming gold-rush town with greenstone galleries and a wild beach.
