Ross is a tiny, historic gold-mining town on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, where the wild Tasman Sea meets dense temperate rainforest. Once a booming gold rush settlement, today Ross is a quiet, off-the-beaten-path stop that rewards travellers with a palpable sense of frontier history and the chance to try your luck panning for gold. The town's main street feels frozen in time, and the surrounding landscape — lush, moody, and untamed — is pure West Coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Ross Goldfields & History Walk – A self-guided walk through the old mining sites, with interpretive panels explaining the area's gold rush past. You can even try gold panning in the creek (gear available at the local information centre).
- Empress Hotel – A classic West Coast pub with a historic facade and a welcoming fireplace. Pop in for a cold beer and a chat with locals.
- Ross Cemetery – The final resting place of many early Chinese and European miners, offering a poignant glimpse into the multicultural nature of the gold rush era.
- Jones Flat Walk – A short, easy walk through regenerating forest and past old mining relics, including a water race and stamper battery.
- Seal Colony at Cape Foulwind – A short drive north, this headland is home to a large colony of New Zealand fur seals, with a well-maintained walking track and viewing platforms.
Suggested Time to Spend
Ross is best as a brief stop of 1–2 hours on a drive between Hokitika and Franz Josef or Fox Glacier. You can easily cover the main sights — the history walk, the pub, and a quick gold-panning attempt — in that time. If you're a keen gold panner or history buff, allow a half-day to fully explore the walks and soak up the atmosphere.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Hokitika – A lively coastal town known for its pounamu (greenstone) carving, Hokitika Gorge's turquoise waters, and the Wildfoods Festival. It's just a 30-minute drive north.
- Franz Josef Glacier – One of New Zealand's most famous glaciers, offering helicopter hikes, ice walks, and stunning valley views. About an hour's drive south.
- Fox Glacier – Slightly smaller and less crowded than Franz Josef, with equally spectacular glacier access and the nearby Lake Matheson reflections. Also about an hour south.
- Punakaiki – Home to the renowned Pancake Rocks and blowholes, this dramatic coastline is a must-see. It's about 1.5 hours north of Ross.
