West Coast Wilderness

Welcome to the West Coast Wilderness, a raw and untamed stretch of New Zealand's South Island where the Tasman Sea crashes against ancient cliffs and temperate rainforest cloaks the landscape. This is a place of dramatic contrasts: pancake rock formations, roaring blowholes, and serene lagoons nestled beneath the Southern Alps. As you drive the coastal highway, the air is thick with the scent of damp earth and salt spray, and the only sounds are the waves and birdsong. It's a paradise for hikers, kayakers, and anyone seeking solitude in nature.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allocate at least 3–4 days to properly experience the West Coast Wilderness. This allows time to explore the Punakaiki area, take a kayak trip on Okarito Lagoon, and visit one of the glaciers. A self-drive itinerary along State Highway 6 is the best way to connect the dots, with plenty of short walks and scenic stops en route. If you're short on time, a focused 2-day loop from Greymouth covering Pancake Rocks and Hokitika Gorge is rewarding.
