Welcome to the West Coast Wilderness, a raw and untamed stretch of New Zealand's South Island where the Tasman Sea crashes against ancient cliffs and temperate rainforest cloaks the landscape. This is a place of dramatic contrasts: pancake rock formations, roaring blowholes, and serene lagoons nestled beneath the Southern Alps. As you drive the coastal highway, the air is thick with the scent of damp earth and salt spray, and the only sounds are the waves and birdsong. It's a paradise for hikers, kayakers, and anyone seeking solitude in nature.
Highlights & What to See
- Punakaiki Pancake Rocks & Blowholes – Marvel at the layered limestone formations and time your visit with high tide for explosive blowhole action.
- Paparoa National Park – Explore dense rainforest trails, limestone caves, and the stunning Pororari River track.
- Okarito Lagoon – Kayak through New Zealand's largest unmodified wetland, home to white herons and other birdlife.
- Franz Josef & Fox Glaciers – Walk to the terminal faces or take a heli-hike for an up-close view of these ancient rivers of ice.
- Hokitika Gorge – Witness the surreal blue-green waters of the gorge, best seen on a short forest walk.
- Shantytown Heritage Park – Step back in time to a recreated 1860s gold-mining town, complete with steam trains and gold panning.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate at least 3–4 days to properly experience the West Coast Wilderness. This allows time to explore the Punakaiki area, take a kayak trip on Okarito Lagoon, and visit one of the glaciers. A self-drive itinerary along State Highway 6 is the best way to connect the dots, with plenty of short walks and scenic stops en route. If you're short on time, a focused 2-day loop from Greymouth covering Pancake Rocks and Hokitika Gorge is rewarding.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Punakaiki – The gateway to the Pancake Rocks and Paparoa National Park, just a short drive north.
- Greymouth – A historic coal-mining town with a brewery, river tours, and access to the scenic TranzAlpine train.
- Hokitika – Known for its jade (pounamu) workshops, wild beaches, and the Hokitika Gorge.
- Franz Josef Glacier – A major hub for glacier walks, hot pools, and rainforest trails.
- Fox Glacier – Smaller and quieter than Franz Josef, with access to Lake Matheson and mountain views.
- Haast Pass – A dramatic mountain pass connecting the West Coast to Wanaka, with waterfalls and short walks.
