Pancake Rocks

Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki are one of New Zealand's most surreal coastal sights—layered limestone formations that look like stacks of giant pancakes, sculpted by millennia of wind and waves. The short walk through rainforest to the rock platform reveals blowholes that spout seawater with dramatic force, especially at high tide. It's a must-stop on any West Coast road trip.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Pancake Rocks itself can be enjoyed in 30–45 minutes, including the loop walk and blowhole viewing. To fully appreciate Punakaiki, plan for at least 2–3 hours, combining the rocks with a short rainforest walk or a stop at the nearby café. Most visitors pass through as part of a self-drive day between Greymouth and Westport.
