Okarito Lagoon is a vast, tranquil coastal lagoon on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, a haven for birdlife and a serene escape from the crowds. This unspoiled wetland, bordered by dense rainforest and the Tasman Sea, offers some of the best kayaking and birdwatching in the country. The small settlement of Okarito, with its historic gold-mining past, adds a touch of frontier charm.
Highlights & What to See
- Kayak the Lagoon: Paddle through mirror-still waters surrounded by snow-capped peaks and rainforest. Spot white herons (kotuku), royal spoonbills, and little blue penguins.
- Okarito Trig Walk: A short but steep hike rewards you with panoramic views of the lagoon, the Southern Alps, and the Tasman Sea.
- Birdwatching at the Heron Sanctuary: The only mainland breeding colony of the rare white heron is accessible by guided tour from nearby Whataroa.
- Okarito Beach: A wild, windswept beach perfect for a solitary stroll, with driftwood and the roar of the Tasman.
- Historic Okarito Township: Explore the old gold-mining settlement, including the 1860s cemetery and the charming Okarito General Store.
Suggested Time to Spend
Spend half a day to a full day here. Arrive early morning for the best bird activity and calmest water for kayaking. Combine the kayak trip (2–3 hours) with the Okarito Trig walk (1 hour) and a beach stroll. If you're a keen birder, allow extra time for the heron sanctuary tour.
