Hokitika Gorge

Hokitika Gorge is a jaw-dropping slice of West Coast wilderness, where the Hokitika River has carved a deep, narrow canyon through ancient granite. The water here is an almost unreal shade of milky turquoise, thanks to glacial flour suspended in the current, and the surrounding native bush clings to sheer rock walls. A short, well-maintained walking track leads to a swing bridge that offers the classic view: the river swirling far below, framed by lush green foliage. It's a quick but unforgettable detour off the main highway, and one of those places that makes you pull out your camera before you've even caught your breath.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend about 30–45 minutes here – enough time to walk the track, cross the bridge, and soak in the views. If you're a keen photographer, budget an hour to wait for the best light and fewer people. The walk is very short (around 1 km return) and easy, making it a perfect quick stop on a longer West Coast road trip. Pair it with a visit to Hokitika town for lunch or coffee to round out a half-day excursion.
