Franz Josef is a small town on New Zealand's West Coast, best known as the gateway to the Franz Josef Glacier. This dynamic river of ice descends from the Southern Alps into temperate rainforest, creating a dramatic landscape that few places on Earth can match. The town itself is compact and tourist-oriented, with a handful of cafes, restaurants, and accommodation options that cater to glacier visitors. The real draw, however, is the glacier and its surrounding wilderness, which offers a mix of easy walks and serious alpine adventures.
Highlights & What to See
- Franz Josef Glacier – The main event. Join a guided heli-hike to walk on the ice, or view it from the Sentinel Rock lookout (a short walk from the car park). The glacier has retreated significantly, but the ice face remains impressive.
- Glacier Valley Walk – A free, easy 30-minute walk from the car park to the terminal face viewpoint. Great for a quick look, but note that the glacier is no longer visible from the main track due to retreat; you'll need a heli-hike to step on ice.
- Te Waonui Forest Walk – A short loop through a remnant of podocarp rainforest, showcasing towering rimu, kahikatea, and ferns. It’s a peaceful contrast to the icy landscape.
- Franz Josef Hot Pools – Soak in natural hot pools surrounded by rainforest. Perfect after a day of hiking.
- Scenic flights – Several operators offer helicopter or fixed-wing flights over the glacier and Mount Cook. Unforgettable views of the ice and alpine peaks.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend one to two nights in Franz Josef. A full day allows for a heli-hike (half-day) plus a forest walk and the hot pools. If you're short on time, a scenic flight and a quick glacier valley walk can be done in a half-day stopover. For those keen on multiple hikes or a more relaxed pace, two nights is ideal.

- Hokitika – A 1.5-hour drive north, this artsy town is known for pounamu (greenstone) carving, a beach with driftwood sculptures, and the Hokitika Gorge.
