Franz Josef Glacier is one of New Zealand's most accessible glaciers, cascading from the Southern Alps down into temperate rainforest just 19 kilometres from the Tasman Sea. This dynamic river of ice offers an extraordinary opportunity to walk on ancient ice, with guided heli-hikes and scenic flights providing unforgettable perspectives. The nearby township of Franz Josef / Waiau serves as the adventure hub, with hot pools, cafés, and a laid-back vibe that perfectly balances alpine exploration.
Highlights & What to See
- Heli-Hike: A scenic helicopter flight lands you on the glacier, where you'll don crampons and explore ice tunnels, crevasses, and seracs with a guide.
- Glacier Valley Walk: A free, easy 1.5-hour return walk from the car park to the glacier terminal face, with interpretive signs about glacial retreat.
- Sentinel Rock Walk: A short 20-minute loop offering panoramic views of the glacier and surrounding peaks, especially photogenic at sunset.
- West Coast Wildlife Centre: See living kiwi in a nocturnal house and learn about conservation efforts for the rowi (the rarest kiwi species).
- Franz Josef Hot Pools: Soak in glacier-fed thermal pools surrounded by native bush – the perfect après-hike treat.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend one full day in Franz Josef: a morning heli-hike (allow 3–4 hours) and an afternoon exploring the valley walks and wildlife centre. If you're short on time, the Glacier Valley Walk can be done in under two hours. Overnight stays are recommended to experience the town's evening atmosphere and to have a buffer for weather-dependent flights.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Fox Glacier: Just 23 kilometres south, Fox Glacier offers a similar heli-hike experience and the stunning Lake Matheson with mirror reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook.
- Okarito: A charming coastal settlement 30 minutes north, known for kayaking on the Okarito Lagoon and spotting white herons (kotuku) at the breeding colony.
- Whataroa: A small town 40 minutes north, gateway to the Ōkārito Kiwi Sanctuary and the white heron sanctuary tours.
- Franz Josef Glacier Hot Pools: Already mentioned above, but worth combining with a visit to the adjacent Te Koha Gallery for local art.
- Punakaiki: About 1.5 hours north, the Pancake Rocks and blowholes are a dramatic coastal stop on the journey to or from the glaciers.
