Beneath the quiet West Coast town of Charleston lies one of New Zealand's most spectacular limestone cave systems: Metro Cave. This underworld of glittering stalactites, stalagmites, and delicate flowstones has been carved over millions of years by the Nile River. A guided tour takes you deep into the earth, where you'll float silently on an underground river in a rubber boat, surrounded by the soft glow of a thousand tiny lights. It's a surreal, otherworldly experience that feels like stepping into a hidden cathedral of rock and water.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for around 2.5 to 3 hours for the guided cave tour itself, including the underground boat ride and walking sections. The tour departs from the Charleston Metro Cave office in town, so allow extra time to get there and check in. If you're combining with other Punakaiki attractions, half a day is ample for the cave experience alone; a full day gives you time to also explore the Pancake Rocks and nearby limestone walks.
