Charles Town is a tiny, historic gold-mining settlement nestled in the dense rainforest of the West Coast, just a short drive north of Punakaiki. This atmospheric ghost town offers a fascinating glimpse into New Zealand's gold rush era, with remnants of old buildings, mining machinery, and a peaceful riverside setting that feels worlds away from the tourist trail.
Highlights & What to See
- Historic Gold Mining Relics: Wander through the remains of stamping batteries, water races, and miners' cottages that dot the forest floor. Interpretive signs explain the area's rich history.
- Pororari River Track: This easy walking track follows the river through lush native bush, passing by the old town site and offering opportunities for birdwatching and photography.
- Punakaiki Pancake Rocks & Blowholes: Just south, these iconic limestone formations and dramatic blowholes are a must-see, especially at high tide when the surf erupts through the rocks.
- Paparo National Park: The surrounding park offers excellent short walks, including the Truman Track to a secluded beach and the Pororari River Track loop.
Suggested Time to Spend
Charles Town itself can be explored in 30 minutes to an hour, but combine it with a walk along the Pororari River Track for a half-day outing. Most visitors spend a full day in the Punakaiki area, taking in the Pancake Rocks, Charles Town, and a rainforest walk. It's an ideal stop on a self-drive itinerary along the West Coast between Greymouth and Westport.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Punakaiki: Home to the famous Pancake Rocks and blowholes, plus cafés and accommodation.
- Paparo National Park: Offers a range of short walks and the longer Inland Pack Track for experienced trampers.
- Greymouth: The largest town on the West Coast, with a brewery, museums, and the start of the TranzAlpine train journey.
- Westport: A coastal town with seal colonies, the Cape Foulwind Walkway, and the historic Denniston coal mine.
- Charleston: A nearby historic gold-mining town with a pub and the adventure of the Metro Cave / Te Ananui Cave system.
