Arthurs Pass National Park is a rugged alpine wilderness straddling the Southern Alps, where the landscape shifts from lush beech forests to craggy peaks and braided river valleys. This is New Zealand's adventure playground for hikers and nature lovers, with the legendary TranzAlpine train threading through its heart. The village of Arthurs Pass serves as the base, a tiny settlement with a few cafes and a pub that feels like a true mountain outpost.
Highlights & What to See
- Devil's Punchbowl Falls – A short, steep walk leads to a stunning 131-metre waterfall cascading into a deep pool; best after rain.
- Otira Viaduct Lookout – Marvel at the engineering feat of this curved viaduct clinging to the mountainside, with views down the Otira Gorge.
- Bealey Valley Track – An easy boardwalk through alpine meadows and tussock, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks.
- Avalanche Peak – For experienced hikers, this challenging day hike rewards with 360-degree panoramas of the Southern Alps.
- Kiwi spotting – The park is one of the best places to see the rare great spotted kiwi; join a guided night walk for the best chance.
- TranzAlpine Scenic Train – Even if you're not crossing the Alps, watching this iconic train rumble through the pass is a highlight.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day exploring the highlights, but to truly appreciate the park, plan for two days. This allows time for a longer hike like Avalanche Peak and a relaxing evening in the village. If you're passing through on the TranzAlpine, a stopover of a few hours is enough for the Devil's Punchbowl walk and a coffee at the local café.
