Pancake Rocks, near the tiny settlement of Punakaiki on the West Coast’s Great Coast Road, are one of New Zealand’s most surreal geological wonders. These towering limestone formations, layered like stacks of pancakes, were sculpted over 30 million years by wind, rain and sea. At high tide, water explodes through blowholes with a thunderous roar – a spectacle that’s as dramatic as it is photogenic. The short walk here is a must for anyone road-tripping the South Island’s wild western edge.
Highlights & What to See
- Pancake Rock viewing platform – The main lookout offers a stunning panorama of the layered rocks and the Tasman Sea crashing below.
- Blowholes – Time your visit for high tide to see water spouting up to 10 metres high through the rock fissures; the Dolomite Point loop walk passes the best ones.
- Punakaiki Cavern – A short detour leads to a small limestone cave with glowworms (bring a torch).
- Pororari River Track – A gentle 20-minute walk from the rocks takes you into lush native forest alongside a crystal-clear river.
- Punakaiki – The nearby village has a café and a small information centre; it’s worth stopping for a coffee and a slice of the legendary whitebait fritter.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 30–60 minutes walking the Dolomite Point loop and watching the blowholes. If you’re driving the Great Coast Road, this makes a perfect 45-minute pit stop. To fully appreciate the area, combine it with a short walk along the Pororari River or a meal in Punakaiki, adding another hour. Pancake Rocks are easily visited as part of a day’s drive between Greymouth and Westport.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Franz Josef Glacier – A 2-hour drive south, this iconic glacier offers heli-hikes and valley walks through temperate rainforest.
- Fox Glacier – Slightly smaller and less crowded than Franz Josef, with excellent guided walks to the terminal face.
- Punakaiki – The pancake rocks’ home village, with a beautiful beach and the Truman Track leading to a secluded cove.
- Hokitika – A charming gold-rush town 45 minutes south, known for its pounamu (greenstone) carving workshops and the Hokitika Gorge’s turquoise waters.
