Okarito Lagoon is a pristine, dark-water estuary on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, a sanctuary for birdlife and a haven for kayakers and nature lovers. This vast, shallow lagoon is the largest unmodified wetland in the country, framed by snow-capped peaks and dense rainforest. The tiny settlement of Okarito, with just a handful of houses and a historic wharf, feels like a forgotten corner of the world. Here, you can paddle silently among white herons (kotuku), hike to a panoramic lookout, and soak up the profound quiet that defines this special place.
Highlights & What to See
- Kayak the Lagoon: Paddle through mirrored waters surrounded by native bush. The lagoon is home to the rare white heron (kotuku) and many other birds. Guided tours are available, or you can rent a kayak and explore independently.
- Okarito Trig Walk: A steep but rewarding 1.5-hour return hike through lush forest to a lookout with stunning views of the lagoon, the Southern Alps, and the Tasman Sea. Best in clear conditions.
- White Heron Sanctuary Tour: From September to March, take a boat trip up the Waitangiroto River to view the only breeding colony of white herons in New Zealand. A truly special wildlife experience.
- Okarito Beach and Wharf: Stroll along the wild, windswept beach or the historic wharf. The sunsets here are spectacular, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink.
- Birdwatching: Okarito is a birding hotspot. Look for royal spoonbills, little shags, black swans, and the elusive fernbird. Early morning and late afternoon are best.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least half a day to Okarito Lagoon. If you're keen on kayaking and the trig walk, a full day is ideal. Many visitors combine a morning kayak with an afternoon walk and sunset at the beach. It's an easy day trip from Franz Josef or Fox Glacier towns, but staying overnight in the Okarito Campground or a local holiday home lets you experience the lagoon's tranquil dawn and dusk.
