Okarito Lagoon is a pristine, dark-water estuary on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, a sanctuary for birdlife and a haven for kayakers and nature lovers. This vast, shallow lagoon is the largest unmodified wetland in the country, framed by snow-capped peaks and dense rainforest. The tiny settlement of Okarito, with just a handful of houses and a historic wharf, feels like a forgotten corner of the world. Here, you can paddle silently among white herons (kotuku), hike to a panoramic lookout, and soak up the profound quiet that defines this special place.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Dedicate at least half a day to Okarito Lagoon. If you're keen on kayaking and the trig walk, a full day is ideal. Many visitors combine a morning kayak with an afternoon walk and sunset at the beach. It's an easy day trip from Franz Josef or Fox Glacier towns, but staying overnight in the Okarito Campground or a local holiday home lets you experience the lagoon's tranquil dawn and dusk.
