Monro Beach Track
On the wild West Coast, the Monro Beach Track is a short but rewarding walk through lush coastal forest to a remote beach where you might spot rare Fiordland crested penguins. The track starts 15 km south of Haast, and the journey feels like stepping into a primeval world of ferns, nikau palms, and the sound of crashing surf.
Highlights & What to See
- Fiordland crested penguins – From July to March, you can see these rare penguins coming ashore at the beach. Keep your distance and stay quiet.
- Coastal forest walk – The 45-minute (one-way) trail winds through dense native bush with views of the Tasman Sea.
- Monro Beach itself – A wild, dark-sand beach strewn with driftwood and pounding waves, perfect for a solitary stroll.
- Wildlife spotting – Look for fur seals on the rocks and seabirds overhead.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1.5–2 hours for the return walk and time to sit quietly on the beach. It’s best done at low tide for easier beach access, and early morning or late afternoon for wildlife activity.
