Lake Matheson, just a short drive from Fox Glacier township, is one of New Zealand’s most iconic mirror lakes. On a calm morning, its dark, tannin-stained waters perfectly reflect the snowy peaks of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman, creating a classic postcard scene. A well-maintained loop track circles the lake through ancient rimu and kahikatea forest, offering several jetty viewpoints that feel almost surreal in their stillness. The walk is easy and family-friendly, with the best reflections occurring at dawn or dusk when the wind drops and the mountains double themselves in the water.
Highlights & What to See
- Mirror reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman from the View of Views jetty – aim for early morning or late evening for the calmest water.
- Lake Matheson Loop Track: a 2.6 km easy circuit through lush temperate rainforest, taking about 1.5 hours at a leisurely pace.
- Kā Roimata o Hinehukatere (Fox Glacier) – combine your visit with a walk to the glacier terminal face or a heli-hike.
- Matheson Café at the trailhead – excellent coffee and homemade baking with a view of the lake.
- West Coast wildlife: keep an eye out for native birds like kererū (wood pigeon), fantail, and the occasional weka.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1.5 to 2 hours walking the loop and lingering at the viewpoints. If you’re chasing the perfect reflection, arrive at least 30 minutes before sunrise or sunset. Add another 30 minutes for a coffee at the café. The lake is best visited as a half-day excursion from Fox Glacier township, leaving the rest of the day for glacier activities or driving north to Franz Josef.
