Lake Matheson

Lake Matheson, just a short drive from Fox Glacier township, is a mirror-still kettle lake renowned for its postcard-perfect reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman. Formed by a retreating glacier around 14,000 years ago, its dark, tea-coloured waters (stained by native forest tannins) create the ideal reflective surface on calm mornings. This is one of New Zealand's most photographed spots, but it deserves more than a quick snap — the easy loop track through ancient rimu and kahikatea forest offers a serene, immersive experience of the West Coast's raw beauty.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1.5–2 hours walking the loop and lingering at viewpoints. For the best experience, plan a sunrise visit (the car park opens early) and allow time for a relaxed café breakfast afterwards. If you're a keen photographer or birdwatcher, budget 2.5–3 hours. The lake is easily combined with a half-day trip to Fox Glacier or Franz Josef Glacier.
