West Coast Road is the rugged, breathtakingly beautiful stretch of State Highway 6 that hugs the wild Tasman Sea between the glaciers and the Haast Pass. This is New Zealand's most dramatic coastal drive, where rainforest-clad mountains plunge straight into roaring surf, and every bend reveals another jaw-dropping vista. The road itself is an adventure — expect narrow, winding sections, one-lane bridges, and frequent stops to absorb the raw power of the West Coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Knights Point Lookout: A must-stop viewpoint offering panoramic views of the coastline, with a plaque commemorating the road's completion in 1965.
- Ship Creek: A short walk through dense rimu forest leads to a wild beach where driftwood and sea lions often rest. The "Swamp Forest" boardwalk is a fascinating detour.
- Monro Beach: A 30-minute walk through coastal forest to a secluded beach, one of the best spots to see Fiordland crested penguins (seasonal, dusk is best).
- Haast River Bridge: One of New Zealand's longest single-lane bridges, crossing the milky-blue Haast River. Stop at the nearby salmon farm for a quick snack.
- Thunder Creek Falls: A short walk from the road leads to a 28m waterfall cascading into a deep pool — perfect for a refreshing break.
- Blue Pools: A 30-minute return walk through beech forest to impossibly clear, turquoise pools on the Makarora River. On a sunny day, the colour is surreal.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate a full day to drive the entire West Coast Road from Fox Glacier to Haast (or reverse), making frequent stops. The 120km stretch takes about 2 hours of pure driving, but with walks and photo stops, plan for 5-7 hours. If you're short on time, focus on the section from Fox Glacier to Ship Creek — it packs the most dramatic scenery. Early morning or late afternoon offers the best light for photography and fewer campervans.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Fox Glacier / Franz Josef Glacier: The twin glaciers are the most famous attractions on the West Coast. Combine a morning glacier walk or heli-hike with an afternoon drive south on the West Coast Road.
- Haast Township: A small settlement at the southern end of the road, with a pub, a few cafes, and access to the Haast River. It's the gateway to the Haast Pass.
- Haast Pass / Makarora: Continue over the Haast Pass into the Otago region, where the landscape shifts from rainforest to tussock-covered mountains. Lake Wanaka and the Blue Pools are highlights.
- Jackson Bay: A short detour off the main road leads to this tiny fishing village with a wharf, a fish-and-chip shop, and views of the Southern Alps meeting the sea.
- Okarito: A quiet lagoon town 30km north of Fox Glacier, famous for its kiwi sanctuary and kayaking on the Okarito Lagoon. A peaceful alternative to glacier crowds.
