Ship Creek, on the wild West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island, is a short but stunning walk through dense coastal forest to a lonely, driftwood-strewn beach. The track crosses a historic swing bridge over the tannin-stained creek, where you might spot white herons or even a kiwi at dawn. The pounding Tasman Sea and the constant roar of surf give this place a raw, elemental feel that lingers long after you leave.
Highlights & What to See
- Ship Creek Walk – two short loop walks: the Kahikatea Swamp Forest Walk (20 min) winds through ancient podocarp forest, while the Dune Lake Walk (30 min) leads to a remote lake and beach.
- Historic swing bridge – a photogenic bridge that sways gently as you cross over the dark waters of Ship Creek.
- Driftwood beach – a wild, windswept shore scattered with bleached logs and driftwood, perfect for contemplative strolls.
- Birdlife – look for white herons (kotuku), royal spoonbills, and the elusive Okarito kiwi (best at dawn or dusk).
- Interpretive panels – learn about the area’s Māori history and the gold rush era when miners worked the creek.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1–1.5 hours to do both short walks and enjoy the beach. It’s an ideal quick stop on a drive along the Haast Highway – stretch your legs, breathe in the fresh air, and snap some photos. If you’re a keen birder, consider arriving early morning for the best chance to see kiwi.
