Reefton, a historic gold-mining town on the West Coast, feels like a living museum with its well-preserved Victorian streetscape. Known as the 'Town of Light' for being the first in New Zealand to have a municipal electricity supply, it blends frontier heritage with contemporary art and café culture. Surrounded by lush native forest and the Victoria Conservation Park, it's an ideal base for exploring the wild West Coast.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Reefton can be explored in a half-day, but overnighting lets you soak up the evening atmosphere and do a morning walk. Two days allow for a full-day hike in Victoria Conservation Park and a relaxed heritage tour. It works well as a stopover between Greymouth and Westport or as a base for multi-day tramping.
