Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki are one of New Zealand's most surreal natural wonders — towering limestone stacks that look like giant stacks of pancakes, sculpted by wind and sea over 30 million years. The short walk leads you through lush coastal forest to dramatic viewpoints where blowholes spout and waves crash into the layered rock formations. It's a must-see on any West Coast road trip.
Highlights & What to See
- Pancake Rock Formations: Walk the easy 20-minute loop trail to see the layered limestone stacks up close, especially dramatic at high tide or sunset.
- Blowholes: When the swell is up, watch seawater explode through the rocks with a thunderous roar — the Dolomite Point blowhole is the most active.
- Punakaiki Cavern: A short detour off the main track leads to a small limestone cave with glowworms (bring a torch).
- Truman Track: A 10-minute walk nearby that drops down to a wild, black-sand beach with sea-carved arches and rock pools.
- Paparo National Park Visitor Centre: Learn about the area's unique geology, flora, and Māori history before or after your walk.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can experience the main Pancake Rocks loop in as little as 30 minutes, but allow at least an hour to soak in the views, watch the blowholes, and explore the short side tracks. For a fuller visit, combine it with the Truman Track and a stop at the visitor centre — budget 1.5–2 hours total. Most travellers stop here as a quick roadside break on the drive between Greymouth and Westport.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Punakaiki: The tiny settlement just north of the rocks has a café, pub, and beachside accommodation — perfect for an overnight stay.
- Pororari River Track: A stunning 1–2 hour walk through a limestone gorge with nikau palms and river views, starting a few minutes south.
- Greymouth: 40 minutes south, this town offers the historic Monteith's Brewery, the Left Bank Art Gallery, and access to the TranzAlpine train.
- Westport: 50 minutes north, a hub for adventure activities like jet-boating, seal colony visits, and the Cape Foulwind walkway.
