Perched high on a rocky ridge above the Hooker Valley, Mueller Hut is one of New Zealand's most iconic alpine huts, offering unparalleled views of Aoraki/Mount Cook, the surrounding peaks, and the Mueller Glacier. A challenging but rewarding hike, this is a must-do for experienced trampers seeking a true backcountry experience in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park.
Highlights & What to See
- Panoramic summit views – From the hut, soak in sweeping vistas of Aoraki/Mount Cook, the Sealy Range, and the Tasman Valley.
- Mueller Glacier lookout – The approach offers dramatic perspectives of the glacier's moraine and ice formations.
- Sunrise and sunset – The hut's position makes for spectacular golden-hour photography over the Southern Alps.
- Alpine flora – Spot hardy plants like Mount Cook buttercups and cushion plants along the rocky trail.
- Stargazing – With minimal light pollution, the night sky here is breathtaking, especially during clear winter nights.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for a full day: the hike from the White Horse Hill carpark takes 3–4 hours up and 2–3 hours down. Most visitors stay overnight at the hut (book well in advance) to enjoy sunset and sunrise. If you're fit, a day trip is possible but rushed – allow at least 7–8 hours round trip with breaks. Summer (Dec–Feb) offers the best conditions, but be prepared for sudden weather changes year-round.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Tasman Glacier and Lake – See icebergs up close on a short walk or boat tour.
- Sealy Tarns – A steep but shorter alternative with reflective tarns and alpine scenery.
- Glacier Explorers – Boat tours on the Tasman Glacier terminal lake (seasonal).
