Marlborough Wine Region

New Zealand's most celebrated wine region, Marlborough sprawls across the sun-drenched Wairau and Awatere Valleys at the top of the South Island. Famous worldwide for its vibrant, zesty Sauvignon Blanc, this is a landscape of endless vineyards backed by rugged mountains and the sparkling Cook Strait. The region's cool climate and long sunshine hours produce wines of intense flavour, and the best way to experience it is by bike or car, meandering between cellar doors, art galleries, and gourmet food producers.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allocate at least two full days to do the region justice. Day one: explore the Wairau Valley wineries and Blenheim's town centre. Day two: head south to the Awatere Valley for a quieter wine-tasting experience, then drive to the coast for a scenic walk or boat cruise in the Marlborough Sounds. If you're a serious wine enthusiast, add a third day to visit smaller boutique producers and join a guided vineyard tour.
