Nestled where the Southern Alps meet the wild West Coast, Makarora is a tiny settlement that punches well above its weight for outdoor enthusiasts. This is the gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park and a serene stop on the road between Wanaka and Haast, offering pristine rivers, ancient forests, and a sense of remoteness that defines the South Island's wilderness.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most travelers pass through Makarora on the Haast Pass route, but it deserves at least half a day to stretch your legs on the Blue Pools track and grab a coffee at the Makarora General Store. If you're keen on a jet boat trip or a longer hike into Mount Aspiring National Park, plan for a full day – you can easily fill 4–6 hours with walks and river activities. Overnight stays are limited to a handful of lodges and campsites, making it a quiet base for early morning tramping.
