Lake Matheson

Lake Matheson, just a short drive from Fox Glacier village, is one of New Zealand's most photographed natural wonders. On a calm morning, the dark, tannin-stained waters reflect Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman with mirror-like perfection, creating a scene that feels almost surreal. A walking track circles the lake through ancient kahikatea swamp forest, offering changing perspectives of the mountains and the chance to spot native birds like the kererū and morepork.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow 1.5–2 hours for the walk and photo stops. Many visitors come for sunrise and are done by mid-morning, leaving the rest of the day for exploring Fox Glacier or Franz Josef. If you're short on time, a 30-minute visit to the Jetty Viewpoint is still rewarding.
