Haast River Valley

Deep in the heart of South Westland, the Haast River Valley is a wild, untamed corridor of ancient rainforest, glacier-fed rivers, and sheer mountain faces. This is New Zealand's remote wilderness at its most dramatic — a place where the roar of the river and the call of the weka replace the noise of the modern world. Driving the Haast Pass Highway is an experience in itself, but stopping to explore the valley's short walks and viewpoints reveals a landscape shaped by ice and water over millennia.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most travellers experience the Haast River Valley as part of a drive over Haast Pass between Wanaka and the West Coast. Allow at least 2–3 hours to stop at several of the walks and viewpoints — you can easily spend a half-day if you linger on the longer tracks. The Blue Pools and Thunder Creek Falls are the most popular, so plan to arrive early in summer to avoid crowds. If you're a keen tramper, the valley is a gateway to longer backcountry routes like the Gillespie Pass Circuit, which requires several days.
