Deep in the heart of South Westland, the Haast River Valley is a wild, untamed corridor of ancient rainforest, glacier-fed rivers, and sheer mountain faces. This is New Zealand's remote wilderness at its most dramatic — a place where the roar of the river and the call of the weka replace the noise of the modern world. Driving the Haast Pass Highway is an experience in itself, but stopping to explore the valley's short walks and viewpoints reveals a landscape shaped by ice and water over millennia.
Highlights & What to See
- Haast Pass Lookout — The highway summit offers a sweeping view down the valley; on a clear day you can see right to the coast.
- Fantail Falls — A short walk leads to this delicate cascade tumbling over a mossy rock face; perfect for a photo stop.
- Thunder Creek Falls — A 28m waterfall plunging into a deep pool, reached via a 10-minute rainforest stroll.
- Blue Pools Walk — Cross a swing bridge over the Makarora River to crystal-clear pools where you can spot trout; the water is an incredible turquoise.
- Pleasant Flat — A riverside picnic spot with views up the valley; great for a break and a chance to feel the scale of the landscape.
- Gates of Haast — Where the river narrows into a raging torrent; a short walk leads to a viewing platform over the churning water.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers experience the Haast River Valley as part of a drive over Haast Pass between Wanaka and the West Coast. Allow at least 2–3 hours to stop at several of the walks and viewpoints — you can easily spend a half-day if you linger on the longer tracks. The Blue Pools and Thunder Creek Falls are the most popular, so plan to arrive early in summer to avoid crowds. If you're a keen tramper, the valley is a gateway to longer backcountry routes like the Gillespie Pass Circuit, which requires several days.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Haast Township — The main service centre for the region, with a visitor centre, petrol station, and a handful of eateries; a good base for exploring the valley.
- Ship Creek — A 20-minute walk through kahikatea swamp forest to a wild beach; look for the old gold-mining relics.
- Wanaka — The eastern gateway to Haast Pass, 2 hours' drive away; a vibrant lakeside town with excellent dining, hiking, and skiing in winter.
- Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers — About an hour north of Haast; two of New Zealand's most accessible glaciers, with guided walks and heli-hikes.
