Haast Beach is a wild, untamed stretch of black sand on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, where the Tasman Sea crashes against ancient dunes and driftwood lies scattered like bones. This is a place for storm-watching, beachcombing, and feeling the raw power of nature. The beach stretches for miles, backed by dense native forest and the towering peaks of the Southern Alps. It's a serene, often deserted spot that rewards those who make the short detour from State Highway 6.
Highlights & What to See
- Wild West Coast Beach: Walk the vast expanse of black sand, listen to the roar of the surf, and watch for seals and penguins that occasionally haul out on the shore.
- Haast River Mouth: Where the river meets the sea, a great place for birdwatching (including white herons and royal spoonbills) and spotting kayakers paddling the braided river.
- Shipwreck Remains: The rusted skeleton of the SS Matai (wrecked in 1920) can still be seen at low tide – a haunting reminder of the coast's treacherous history.
- Te Wāhipounamu – South West New Zealand World Heritage Area: The beach is part of this UNESCO-listed wilderness; look inland for views of the glacier-carved valleys.
- Haast Beach Holiday Park: A laid-back base for exploring the area, with direct access to the beach and a friendly local vibe.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is plenty – spend an hour or two walking the beach, then combine with a visit to the nearby Haast River or a short drive to the Jackson Bay wharf for lunch. If you're a keen birdwatcher or photographer, you may want to linger longer, especially at sunrise or sunset when the light is dramatic. Most visitors pass through on their way between Franz Josef and Wanaka, but a stop here breaks the drive beautifully.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Jackson Bay: A tiny fishing settlement 10 minutes south, with a historic wharf, a food truck (try the whitebait fritters), and stunning views of the bay.
- Haast River Walk: A short, easy trail through podocarp forest to a swing bridge over the river – perfect for a leg-stretcher.
- Ship Creek: 20 minutes north, with a short boardwalk through kahikatea swamp forest and a wild beach where seals often rest.
- Knight's Point Lookout: A scenic viewpoint on the highway with panoramic views of the coastline – great for photos.
- Franz Josef / Fox Glaciers: About 1.5 hours north, these iconic glaciers offer heli-hikes and valley walks.
