Abel Tasman National Park is New Zealand's smallest national park, but it packs a punch with its golden sand beaches, turquoise waters, and lush coastal forests. This is a place where you can hike the famous Abel Tasman Coast Track, kayak alongside fur seals, or simply soak up the sun on a secluded beach. The park's gentle climate and accessible trails make it a favorite for both day-trippers and multi-day adventurers.
Highlights & What to See
- Abel Tasman Coast Track: One of New Zealand's Great Walks, this 60 km trail offers stunning coastal views, pristine beaches, and lush native bush. You can hike the entire track over 3–5 days or enjoy shorter sections like the walk from Marahau to Anchorage.
- Golden Sand Beaches: Anchor Bay, Bark Bay, and Onetahuti Beach are postcard-perfect spots for swimming, picnicking, or just relaxing. The sand is famously golden and the water crystal clear.
- Kayaking and Water Taxis: Explore the coastline by sea kayak, paddling through granite caves and spotting seals, penguins, and dolphins. Water taxis can drop you off at trailheads or beaches for a one-way walk.
- Wildlife Encounters: Keep an eye out for fur seals basking on rocks, little blue penguins, and a variety of native birds like the tui and kererū. The park is also home to the rare weka.
- Cleopatra's Pool: A natural rock slide and swimming hole near the Torrent Bay Estuary – a fun spot for a refreshing dip after a hike.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2–3 days to experience the park properly. If you're short on time, a day trip from Nelson or Motueka can include a short walk and a kayak or boat tour. For the full experience, allow 3–5 days to hike the entire Coast Track, staying in DOC huts or campgrounds. The park is best visited between October and April when the weather is warm and the days long.
