Perched on the wild West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, Hokitika is a former gold-rush town that has reinvented itself as a creative and culinary hub. The dramatic Tasman Sea crashes against the driftwood-strewn beach, while the Southern Alps loom to the east. This is a place where you can watch greenstone (pounamu) being carved, sample award-winning cheeses, and explore the untamed wilderness of the West Coast. The town's quirky charm is matched by its stunning natural surroundings, making it an unmissable stop on any South Island road trip.
Highlights & What to See
- Hokitika Gorge Walk – A short, easy walk through lush native forest leads to a swingbridge over impossibly turquoise water, fed by glacial flour from the Southern Alps. The colour is surreal, especially on a sunny day.
- Glow Worm Dell – Just a five-minute walk from the town centre, this free attraction lets you see thousands of glow worms illuminating the damp bank after dark. Bring a torch and go after sunset.
- National Kiwi Centre – Get up close with New Zealand's iconic kiwi bird in a nocturnal house, plus tuatara and giant eels. A great option for families or a rainy day.
- Beach and Driftwood Art – Hokitika Beach is famous for its ever-changing driftwood sculptures, often created by locals and visitors. The sunsets here are spectacular, with the Southern Alps as a backdrop.
- West Coast Wilderness Trail – A cycle trail that winds through rainforest, along lakes, and past historic gold-mining sites. You can rent bikes in town and do a section in a few hours.
- Hokitika Craft Gallery & Carving Shed – Watch pounamu (greenstone) carvers at work and browse galleries showcasing local jade, wood, and bone carvings. It's a perfect spot for a unique souvenir.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers spend one full day and one night in Hokitika, which allows time for the gorge walk, a visit to the kiwi centre, and a sunset stroll on the beach. If you're cycling the Wilderness Trail or want to explore the nearby lakes, add an extra day. Hokitika also works well as a lunch stop on the drive between Greymouth and the glaciers.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Franz Josef Glacier – About 135 km south, this famous glacier offers helicopter hikes and ice walks. Combine with a visit to the hot pools.
- Fox Glacier – Slightly further south, Fox Glacier is less crowded and offers similar glacier experiences, plus the stunning Lake Matheson.
- Punakaiki – North of Hokitika, the Pancake Rocks and blowholes are a must-see geological wonder, especially at high tide.
- Lake Kaniere – A beautiful lake just east of Hokitika, perfect for kayaking, swimming, or a picnic. The Lake Kaniere Walkway is a gentle 3-hour loop.
- Hokitika Gorge – Already mentioned, but worth a dedicated trip for the incredible water colour and easy walk.
