Westland National Park is a wild, untamed slice of New Zealand’s West Coast, where ancient rainforests meet the Tasman Sea and glaciers carve their way down from the Southern Alps. Known officially as Westland Tai Poutini National Park, this UNESCO World Heritage site offers a raw, dramatic landscape that feels like stepping into a prehistoric world. Whether you’re crunching across moraine at the foot of Franz Josef Glacier or soaking in the mist of a rainforest waterfall, the park’s power and beauty are immediate and humbling.
Highlights & What to See
- Franz Josef Glacier (Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere) – one of the most accessible glaciers on Earth; you can walk right up to the terminal face or take a heli-hike onto the ice.
- Fox Glacier (Te Moeka o Tuawe) – slightly less busy than its neighbour, with equally stunning views and a shorter walk to the glacier viewpoint.
- Lake Matheson – famous for mirror-perfect reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman; best visited at dawn or dusk.
- Okarito Lagoon – New Zealand’s largest unmodified wetland, perfect for kayaking, birdwatching (including the rare white heron), and the peaceful Okarito Trig walking track.
- Gillespies Beach – a wild, black-sand beach with gold-mining history, seal colonies, and a short walk to a historic miners’ cemetery.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days is ideal to experience the park’s highlights without rushing. Spend one day exploring Franz Josef Glacier and its valley walks, a second day at Fox Glacier and Lake Matheson, and a third day kayaking or hiking around Okarito. If you’re short on time, a well-paced overnight stop in Franz Josef or Fox Glacier lets you see a glacier and the lake. For hikers, the Copland Track (with its natural hot pools) and the Roberts Point Track deserve a full day each.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Hokitika – a charming coastal town known for its pounamu (greenstone) carving, wild beaches, and the Hokitika Gorge’s turquoise water.
- Whataroa – gateway to the Waitangi Roto Nature Reserve, where you can see the only mainland nesting colony of kotuku (white heron).
- Haast Pass Highway – a scenic drive through rainforest, waterfalls, and mountain passes, connecting to Wanaka and the Otago region.
- Punakaiki – home to the famous Pancake Rocks and blowholes, about 1.5 hours north along the coast.
