Twizel might look like a small, orderly town from the highway, but it’s the gateway to some of New Zealand’s most dramatic landscapes. Nestled between the Southern Alps and the braided rivers of the Mackenzie Basin, this purpose-built town offers a quiet base for exploring the turquoise lakes, golden tussock hills, and the dark-sky wonders of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. With a relaxed, outdoorsy vibe and a handful of excellent cafes, Twizel is a favourite stop for cyclists, hikers, and photographers seeking the iconic views of Aoraki/Mount Cook.
Highlights & What to See
- Lake Pukaki Viewpoint – Pull over on the road to Mount Cook for the quintessential postcard view: milky-blue water backed by the snow-capped peak of Aoraki. It’s even better at sunrise or sunset.
- Ohau Snow Fields – One of the South Island’s best-kept skiing secrets, offering uncrowded slopes and stunning views over Lake Ohau. Great for intermediates and families.
- Twizel River Trail – A flat, easy cycle or walk along the braided Twizel River, perfect for spotting black stilts (kakī) and enjoying the wide-open Mackenzie skies.
- Clay Cliffs – A short drive northwest leads to these dramatic, pinnacled rock formations that feel otherworldly. The unsealed road requires care but rewards with a surreal landscape.
- Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park – Just 45 minutes away, you can hike the Hooker Valley Track, take a scenic flight, or simply gaze up at New Zealand’s highest peak.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three nights in Twizel give you enough time to explore the highlights without rushing. Use it as a base for a day trip to Aoraki/Mount Cook, a half-day on the Ohau ski slopes (winter), and an evening stargazing session. If you’re cycling the Alps 2 Ocean Trail, Twizel is a natural overnight stop; plan for at least one full day to rest and venture out.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Omarama – A 20-minute drive south, known for clay cliffs, gliding, and the hot tubs at Omarama Hot Tubs. A quick detour on the way to or from Twizel.
- Mount Cook Village – The hub for Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, with the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre and day walks like the Tasman Glacier View.
- Lindis Pass – A scenic drive between Twizel and Wanaka, offering golden tussock landscapes and photo stops. Great for a road-trip detour.
- Wanaka – About 1.5 hours west, with its lakefront, Puzzling World, and nearby Rob Roy Glacier. Combine Twizel with Wanaka for a longer South Island itinerary.
