On the wild West Coast, just south of Haast, Ship Creek offers a short but immersive walk through dense rainforest to a windswept beach where driftwood and dunes meet the Tasman Sea. This is the West Coast at its most raw and elemental – a place where you can imagine early Māori and European explorers hauling their vessels ashore. The air is thick with the scent of damp earth and salt spray, and the only sounds are the crashing waves and the calls of native birds.
Highlights & What to See
- Kahikatea Swamp Forest Walk – A 20-minute loop on boardwalks through a primeval grove of towering kahikatea (white pine), some over 600 years old. Keep an eye out for kererū (wood pigeon) and tūī in the canopy.
- Dune Lake Walk – A 30-minute trail that leads to a serene, tea-coloured lake nestled behind the dunes, a perfect spot for birdwatching and photography.
- Ship Creek Beach – Access via the short beach track; this vast, driftwood-littered shoreline is ideal for a contemplative stroll. Look for the remains of old shipwrecks at low tide.
- Māori History – The area was a key stopping point for Māori travelling along the coast to collect pounamu (greenstone). Interpretive signs explain the cultural significance.
- Wildlife Spotting – Scan the surf for Hector’s dolphins, and watch for white herons and royal spoonbills in the estuary.
Suggested Time to Spend
Budget 1–2 hours to comfortably complete both short walks and spend time on the beach. Ship Creek is a perfect leg-stretcher on the drive between Haast and Fox Glacier – aim to arrive mid-morning or late afternoon for the best light and fewer people. If you’re a keen birder or photographer, allow an extra hour to linger.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Haast – 15 minutes north, this small town is the gateway to the Haast River and offers jet boat tours, salmon fishing, and the informative Haast Visitor Centre.
- Jackson Bay – A scenic 30-minute drive south; this remote fishing village has a classic West Coast pub and a pebbly beach with views of the Southern Alps.
- Fox Glacier – About 1.5 hours north, where you can walk to the glacier terminal or take a heli-hike onto the ice.
- Lake Moeraki – A 20-minute drive north, this tranquil lake is surrounded by rainforest and offers kayaking, glowworm tours, and the famous Moeraki Boulders (though those are on the East Coast – the lake itself is worth a stop).
- Haast Pass / Makarora – Continue east over the Haast Pass to reach the lakes of Wanaka and Queenstown; the drive itself is stunning with waterfalls and short walks.
