Ship Creek

On the wild West Coast, just south of Haast, Ship Creek offers a short but immersive walk through dense rainforest to a windswept beach where driftwood and dunes meet the Tasman Sea. This is the West Coast at its most raw and elemental – a place where you can imagine early Māori and European explorers hauling their vessels ashore. The air is thick with the scent of damp earth and salt spray, and the only sounds are the crashing waves and the calls of native birds.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Budget 1–2 hours to comfortably complete both short walks and spend time on the beach. Ship Creek is a perfect leg-stretcher on the drive between Haast and Fox Glacier – aim to arrive mid-morning or late afternoon for the best light and fewer people. If you’re a keen birder or photographer, allow an extra hour to linger.
