Punakaiki is a tiny settlement on the wild West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, famous for the Pancake Rocks and blowholes. This is a place where the Tasman Sea crashes against limestone cliffs, sending plumes of spray skyward. The village itself is a scattering of lodges and a café, but the real draw is the dramatic coastline and lush rainforest that meets the sea.
Highlights & What to See
- Pancake Rocks & Blowholes: The star attraction – a surreal formation of layered limestone that looks like stacks of pancakes. Walk the easy loop track at high tide to see the blowholes erupt.
- Punakaiki Cavern: A short walk from the road leads to a limestone cave with glowworms. Bring a torch and sturdy shoes.
- Truman Track: A 10-minute rainforest walk that ends at a stunning beach with sea-carved arches and rock pools.
- Pororari River Track: A gentle walk through lush nikau palm forest along a crystal-clear river – perfect for a swim on a warm day.
- Paparo National Park: Punakaiki is the gateway to this park, offering longer hikes like the Inland Pack Track for multi-day adventures.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough to see the Pancake Rocks and do a short walk, but to fully appreciate the area – including a longer hike or a kayak trip on the Pororari River – plan for a full day. Overnight stays are rewarding; the sunset light on the rocks is magical, and the village has a handful of comfortable lodges.
