Just a short drive south of Hokitika, Lake Mahinapua is a serene, dark-water lake fringed by native bush and sand dunes. A former sea inlet, it's now a calm freshwater haven perfect for kayaking, swimming, or simply soaking up the West Coast's wild beauty. The lake is part of a scenic reserve with walking tracks, picnic spots, and a historic swingbridge that adds a touch of adventure.
Highlights & What to See
- Lake Mahinapua Walkway – a gentle 1.5-km loop through lush rainforest, with boardwalks and birdlife (look for pūkeko and fantails).
- Historic Swingbridge – cross the Mahinapua Creek on a suspended bridge that sways with each step; a hit with kids and photographers.
- Kayaking & Stand-Up Paddleboarding – hire gear in Hokitika or bring your own; the lake's calm waters and sheltered coves are ideal for paddling.
- Swimming – the lake has a small sandy beach near the picnic area; the water is dark but clean and surprisingly warm in summer.
- Picnic by the Lake – shaded tables and a grassy bank make for a perfect lunch spot; keep an eye out for the resident eels near the jetty.
- Mahinapua Creek – follow the short track to where the lake meets the creek; on calm days you'll see reflections of the surrounding bush.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ample to enjoy the lake's main attractions. Arrive mid-morning for a paddle and walk, then settle in for a picnic lunch.
