Imagine walking through a lush West Coast rainforest to a river so intensely turquoise it looks like it's been dyed. That's the Hokitika Gorge Walk, a short but spectacular track that delivers one of New Zealand's most photographed natural wonders. The colour comes from glacial flour suspended in the water, and on a sunny day the contrast with the surrounding green bush is almost surreal. A swing bridge spans the gorge, offering dizzying views straight down into the milky-blue water below.
Highlights & What to See
- The turquoise water: The main draw – the Hokitika River's unbelievable blue-green hue, best seen from the swing bridge or the viewing platform at the end of the track.
- Swing bridge and gorge views: Cross the sturdy swing bridge for a heart-in-your-throat perspective of the river swirling through the narrow gorge.
- Short and sweet walk: The main track is only about 1.5 km return (30–40 minutes), making it accessible for most fitness levels and families with kids.
- Rainforest setting: The path winds through dense native bush with ferns, mosses, and rimu trees – quintessential West Coast scenery.
- Nearby Hokitika town: After the walk, explore the quirky town of Hokitika, known for its pounamu (greenstone) carving workshops, wild beach driftwood sculptures, and the annual Wildfoods Festival.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1–1.5 hours for the walk itself plus a bit of time to soak in the views. It's an ideal short stop on a road trip along the West Coast – you can easily fit it in between Greymouth and Franz Josef. If you're based in Hokitika, it's a perfect morning or afternoon excursion. Combine it with a visit to the Hokitika Gorge scenic reserve or a picnic by the river.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Franz Josef Glacier / Fox Glacier: About 1.5 hours south, these famous glaciers offer ice hikes and heli-tours.
- Punakaiki Pancake Rocks: An hour north, these layered limestone formations and blowholes are a must-see.
- Greymouth: The largest town on the West Coast, 40 minutes north, with the Monteith's Brewery and the start of the TranzAlpine train journey.
