The Heaphy Track is one of New Zealand's Great Walks, a multi-day adventure through the diverse landscapes of Kahurangi National Park. Stretching 78.4 km from the west coast at Kohaihai to the east at Brown Hut, the track offers an incredible journey from lush rainforests and nikau palms to tussock-covered highlands and golden beaches. This is a tramper's paradise, with well-maintained huts and campsites along the route, and the chance to spot kiwi, weka, and the iconic kea.
Highlights & What to See
- Kohaihai River Mouth: Start or end your journey at this stunning coastal spot, where the river meets the Tasman Sea, perfect for a swim or picnic.
- Nikau Palm Forest: Walk through a lush, sub-tropical section of the track, with towering nikau palms and dense fern undergrowth.
- Perry Saddle Hut: A historic hut set in alpine tussock, offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.
- Gouland Downs: A vast, open area of limestone pavement and tussock, with unique plant life and abundant birdlife.
- Heaphy River Swing Bridge: Cross the impressive swing bridge over the Heaphy River, a highlight of the track.
- Kākāpō Bay: A beautiful, remote beach along the coast, named after the rare night parrot, and a great spot for a break.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most walkers complete the Heaphy Track in 4 to 6 days, depending on fitness and pace. A typical itinerary involves 4-6 hours of walking per day, with overnight stays at the well-equipped huts or campsites. It's best to book huts and transport in advance, especially during peak season (October to April). For a more relaxed experience, allow 5 days to fully soak in the scenery and wildlife.
