Franz Josef Glacier is one of New Zealand's most accessible and dramatic glaciers, plunging from the Southern Alps down into temperate rainforest just a few kilometers from the coast. Unlike many glaciers, Franz Josef is dynamic and constantly moving, offering a rare opportunity to get up close to ancient ice without needing mountaineering skills. The tiny town of Franz Josef (Waiau) serves as the gateway, with a laid-back vibe, hot pools, and a handful of cafes and lodges that cater to adventurers and nature lovers alike.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend one full day at Franz Josef Glacier. If you're doing a heli-hike, allow at least half a day for the experience. Combine it with a walk to the terminal face viewpoint and a visit to Lake Matheson for sunset. If you have two days, consider adding a guided ice climbing trip or a kayak on Okarito Lagoon. The glacier can be visited year-round, but summer (December–February) offers the best weather for hiking and flying.
