Franz Josef Glacier is one of New Zealand's most accessible and dramatic glaciers, plunging from the Southern Alps down into temperate rainforest just a few kilometers from the coast. Unlike many glaciers, Franz Josef is dynamic and constantly moving, offering a rare opportunity to get up close to ancient ice without needing mountaineering skills. The tiny town of Franz Josef (Waiau) serves as the gateway, with a laid-back vibe, hot pools, and a handful of cafes and lodges that cater to adventurers and nature lovers alike.
Highlights & What to See
- Glacier Valley Walk – A free, well-maintained track that leads to the terminal face viewpoint, passing through lush rainforest and across rocky riverbeds. The glacier looms ahead, a river of ice descending from the mountains.
- Heli-Hike – For a truly immersive experience, take a helicopter flight onto the glacier itself, where you can walk on the ice, explore crevasses, and see the surreal blue ice formations up close. Book in advance during peak season.
- Lake Matheson – A short drive away, this mirror lake offers classic reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman, best seen at dawn or dusk when the water is still.
- West Coast Wildlife Centre – A great rainy-day option, this conservation centre houses the rare rowi kiwi and tuatara, with behind-the-scenes tours available.
- Hot Pools – Soak tired muscles at the Glacier Hot Pools, set in native bush with views of the glacier – perfect after a day of hiking.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend one full day at Franz Josef Glacier. If you're doing a heli-hike, allow at least half a day for the experience. Combine it with a walk to the terminal face viewpoint and a visit to Lake Matheson for sunset. If you have two days, consider adding a guided ice climbing trip or a kayak on Okarito Lagoon. The glacier can be visited year-round, but summer (December–February) offers the best weather for hiking and flying.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Fox Glacier – Just 23 km south, Fox Glacier is less visited but equally stunning, with its own heli-hikes and the famous Lake Matheson nearby.
- Okarito – A tiny coastal settlement with a beautiful lagoon, kayaking, and a short walk to a lookout over the Tasman Sea. It's a peaceful alternative to the glacier towns.
- Haast Pass – Drive south over the pass into Mount Aspiring National Park, with waterfalls, blue pools, and great short walks – a scenic route to Wanaka.
- Hokitika – North of Franz Josef, Hokitika is known for its pounamu (greenstone) carving, wild beaches, and the Hokitika Gorge with its vivid turquoise water.
