Just a short drive north of Hokitika, the Fox River Caves offer a rugged, off-the-beaten-path adventure into the limestone underworld of the West Coast. This wild cave system, carved by the Fox River over millennia, requires a torch and a sense of exploration – there are no guided tours or developed walkways, just raw, wet, and muddy passages that reward the intrepid with stunning glowworm displays and ancient rock formations. It's a true backcountry experience for those who don't mind getting their boots dirty.
Highlights & What to See
- Glowworm Grotto: Deep inside the main cave, thousands of glowworms create a starry ceiling – bring a torch and turn it off to see them shimmer.
- Limestone Formations: Stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstone decorate the chambers, still actively growing in the damp environment.
- Underground Streams: The Fox River flows through the cave, creating small waterfalls and pools – expect to wade in places during wet weather.
- Fossil Remnants: Keep an eye out for marine fossils embedded in the limestone walls, remnants of the ancient seafloor.
- Nearby Pancake Rocks: Combine your visit with a stop at Punakaiki's famous Pancake Rocks and blowholes, just a 20-minute drive north.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1–2 hours to explore the main cave chamber and the glowworm grotto. The cave is not extensive, but the unimproved terrain means slow going. Combine with a visit to the Pancake Rocks for a half-day trip from Hokitika. Check weather conditions beforehand – heavy rain can cause flash flooding in the cave.
