Fox Glacier is one of New Zealand's most accessible and dramatic glaciers, cascading from the Southern Alps down into temperate rainforest just a few kilometres from the Tasman Sea. Unlike many glaciers worldwide, Fox is still advancing, and its terminal face is remarkably low in altitude, making it a rare opportunity to walk on ancient ice without mountaineering experience. The tiny township of Fox Glacier (population ~300) is the base for heli-hikes, scenic flights, and guided walks that bring you up close to the crevasses and ice caves of this living river of ice.
Highlights & What to See
- Heli-Hike on the Glacier – The quintessential experience: a short helicopter flight lands you on the ice, where a guide leads you through ice tunnels, over crevasses, and past sparkling blue seracs. No prior experience needed.
- Fox Glacier Valley Walk – A free, easy 30-minute walk from the car park to a viewpoint of the terminal face (access can be limited in summer due to rockfall; check conditions).
- Lake Matheson – Just 5 km east of the village, this mirror-still lake offers postcard-perfect reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman, especially at sunrise or sunset. The 2.6 km loop trail is flat and family-friendly.
- Chalet Lookout – A short, steep 20-minute climb to a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the glacier and the valley.
- Gillespies Beach – A wild black-sand beach 20 minutes west, with a seal colony and a historic gold-mining trail. Great for a sunset stroll.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend one full day and one night in Fox Glacier. Book a heli-hike for the morning (weather permitting) and explore Lake Matheson in the late afternoon or early next morning. If you have two days, add a scenic flight over the glacier and the Franz Josef area, or a longer walk on the glacier with a full-day guided ice climb.

- Haast Pass – One hour south, the gateway to the west coast's dramatic river valleys and waterfalls, including Thunder Creek Falls and the Blue Pools.
- Lake Wanaka & Mount Aspiring National Park – A scenic 2.5-hour drive over Haast Pass leads to Wanaka, with world-class hiking, biking, and lake activities.
