Cardrona is a tiny, historic gold-mining settlement nestled in a high-country valley between Wanaka and Queenstown. With its beautifully preserved 19th-century buildings, a world-famous pub, and a serene, off-the-beaten-path atmosphere, it offers a delightful step back in time and a perfect pit stop on any South Island road trip.
Highlights & What to See
- Cardrona Hotel – One of New Zealand’s most photographed pubs, this iconic 1863 hotel serves hearty meals, local beers, and has a roaring fire in winter. Stop for a drink and a photo of its historic facade.
- Cardrona Bra Fence – A quirky roadside attraction where hundreds of bras have been tied to a fence since 1999, raising funds for breast cancer research. It’s a unique and surprisingly poignant sight.
- Cardrona Valley – Drive or cycle through this dramatic glacial valley, with golden tussock-covered hills, braided rivers, and stunning mountain vistas. In autumn, the poplars turn brilliant gold.

- Historic Gold Mining Sites – Explore remnants of the 1860s gold rush, including old stone cottages, a cemetery, and the Cardrona Schoolhouse (now a museum).
Suggested Time to Spend
Cardrona is best enjoyed as a short stop of 1–2 hours, or an overnight if you want to soak up the pub atmosphere and explore the valley on foot or bike. Most visitors spend 30–60 minutes at the hotel and bra fence, then continue on. If you’re a keen hiker or distillery enthusiast, you could easily fill half a day here.
