Spanning the spine of the Southern Alps, Aspiring National Park is a raw, untamed wilderness of glacier-carved valleys, alpine lakes, and New Zealand’s highest peak outside Aoraki/Mount Cook—the iconic Tititea/Mount Aspiring. This UNESCO World Heritage site (part of Te Wāhipounamu) rewards adventurous souls with some of the country’s most dramatic tramping, from the famous Routeburn Track to lesser-known gems like the Rees-Dart Valley. Whether you’re a day-walker or a multi-day trekker, the park’s ancient beech forests, hanging glaciers, and crystal-clear rivers will leave you spellbound.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Dedicate at least 2–3 days to explore the park’s highlights. If you’re tackling the Routeburn Track, plan for 3 days (one-way) or combine it with the Greenstone Track for a 5-day loop. For a sampler, a day trip from Wanaka to Rob Roy Glacier or the Blue Pools can be done in half a day, but you’ll want a full day to soak in the scenery. Self-drivers can easily base themselves in Wanaka or Makarora and pick a different trail each day.
