Spanning the spine of the Southern Alps, Aspiring National Park is a raw, untamed wilderness of glacier-carved valleys, alpine lakes, and New Zealand’s highest peak outside Aoraki/Mount Cook—the iconic Tititea/Mount Aspiring. This UNESCO World Heritage site (part of Te Wāhipounamu) rewards adventurous souls with some of the country’s most dramatic tramping, from the famous Routeburn Track to lesser-known gems like the Rees-Dart Valley. Whether you’re a day-walker or a multi-day trekker, the park’s ancient beech forests, hanging glaciers, and crystal-clear rivers will leave you spellbound.
Highlights & What to See
- Routeburn Track – One of New Zealand’s Great Walks, this 32 km alpine traverse connects the Hollyford Valley to the Dart Valley, passing through subalpine meadows, waterfalls, and the stunning Harris Saddle.
- Tititea/Mount Aspiring – The park’s namesake peak (3,033 m) is a mountaineer’s dream; even if you don’t summit, the views from the Matukituki Valley are unforgettable.
- Rob Roy Glacier Track – A rewarding day walk from Wanaka that brings you face-to-face with a towering glacier, complete with avalanche debris and blue ice.
- Rees-Dart Track – A 4–5 day loop through the rugged Rees and Dart valleys, offering river crossings, swing bridges, and backcountry huts.
- Blue Pools Track – An easy stroll from the Makarora River to brilliant turquoise pools fed by glacier melt—a perfect quick dip on a hot day.
- Lake Wānaka lookout – While technically just outside the park, the lake’s shoreline provides stunning views of the park’s peaks, especially at sunrise.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least 2–3 days to explore the park’s highlights. If you’re tackling the Routeburn Track, plan for 3 days (one-way) or combine it with the Greenstone Track for a 5-day loop. For a sampler, a day trip from Wanaka to Rob Roy Glacier or the Blue Pools can be done in half a day, but you’ll want a full day to soak in the scenery. Self-drivers can easily base themselves in Wanaka or Makarora and pick a different trail each day.
