Arthurs Pass is a dramatic alpine gateway straddling the Southern Alps, where the road from Hokitika to Christchurch snakes through a landscape of towering beech forests, thundering waterfalls, and jagged peaks. This small village is a launchpad for some of New Zealand's most rewarding day walks and a vital link in any South Island self-drive itinerary.
Highlights & What to See
- Devil's Punchbowl Waterfall – A 131-metre cascade accessible via a short but steep 20-minute walk through mossy forest; the spray and roar are unforgettable.
- Otira Viaduct Lookout – Marvel at the engineering marvel of the viaduct clinging to sheer cliffs, with panoramic views of the Otira Gorge.
- Bealey Valley Track – A gentle walk through ancient beech forest to a swingbridge over the Bealey River; keep an eye out for kea parrots.
- Temple Basin Ski Area – In winter, this club field offers challenging terrain; in summer, the alpine tarns and wildflowers are a hiker's delight.
- Arthurs Pass National Park Visitor Centre – Excellent exhibits on the region's geology, flora, and fauna, plus up-to-date track conditions.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers spend a half-day to a full day here, either as a stopover between Hokitika and Christchurch or as a day trip from one of those cities. If you're keen on a longer walk like the Avalanche Peak Track (6–8 hours), plan an overnight stay. The village has basic accommodation and a café, making it easy to break the drive.
