Arthurs Pass is a dramatic alpine gateway straddling the Southern Alps, where the road from Hokitika to Christchurch snakes through a landscape of towering beech forests, thundering waterfalls, and jagged peaks. This small village is a launchpad for some of New Zealand's most rewarding day walks and a vital link in any South Island self-drive itinerary.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most travellers spend a half-day to a full day here, either as a stopover between Hokitika and Christchurch or as a day trip from one of those cities. If you're keen on a longer walk like the Avalanche Peak Track (6–8 hours), plan an overnight stay. The village has basic accommodation and a café, making it easy to break the drive.
