West Coast Rainforest

Step into a world of ancient, mist-shrouded giants: the West Coast Rainforest is one of New Zealand's most primal landscapes. Here, temperate rainforest drapes the rugged coastline in a thick, green blanket of rimu, kahikatea, and silver beech, with ferns and mosses carpeting the forest floor. The air is heavy with moisture and the scent of damp earth; the only sounds are birdsong and the distant roar of the Tasman Sea. This is a place where you can feel the raw power of nature, from thundering waterfalls to wild, untamed beaches.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Spend a full day exploring the rainforest between Haast and Fox Glacier. You can easily break up the drive with short walks (Ship Creek, Monro Beach, Thunder Creek) and a jet boat ride on the Haast River. If you're a keen hiker, consider a multi-day tramp on the Haast Pass or a guided overnight trip into the remote wilderness. Most visitors spend 4–6 hours driving and stopping, but a full day allows for a more immersive experience.
